Brilliant Sudoku

Sudoku is a solved interface with an unsolved problem underneath it. The interface is a nine-by-nine grid that everyone already understands. The unsolved part is that most sudoku apps have accumulated so much around the grid, ads between puzzles, coins, daily rewards, timers you did not ask for, that the actual activity of sitting quietly with a puzzle has been crowded out of its own app.

We wanted the version that respects what the player came for, and a puzzle generator good enough that the difficulty labels mean something.

The generator came first, because it is the part players judge without knowing they are judging it. Every puzzle is generated with a guaranteed unique solution and graded by the solving techniques actually required rather than by counting empty cells, which is the lazy method that makes "expert" puzzles feel arbitrary rather than hard. Five levels, from novice to expert, that hold their meaning.

Then we removed things. No interruption between puzzles, no currency, no reward loop, and no timer imposed on a player who wants to think. Unlimited undo and proper pencil notes are in, because those are tools for thinking rather than decorations around it.

The board itself was designed for a thumb rather than a mouse: cell targets large enough to hit reliably, a number pad that does not require precision, and contrast high enough to read the grid outdoors in daylight, which is where a lot of phone puzzling actually happens.

Brilliant Sudoku ships with five graded difficulty levels, unlimited undo, pencil notes, and a board designed to be legible and quiet.

It is a small product and deliberately so. It exists as proof that we will build the restrained version of something when the restrained version is the better product, which is an easier thing to claim than to demonstrate.
