Nepaler

Nepal has no social platform of its own. Conversation about Nepali politics, culture, and daily life happens on networks designed elsewhere, moderated by policies written elsewhere, and surfaced by algorithms with no particular interest in a country of thirty million people. Nepaler, launched as JESTHA, was commissioned to be the alternative: a place built for Nepali public conversation rather than one adapted to it.

That is a harder engineering brief than it sounds. A social product is the least forgiving thing you can build, because it is worthless when empty and it breaks when full. It has to feel alive on day one with almost no content, stay fast as feeds grow, and handle moderation from the first week rather than the first crisis. And it has to do all of this on the phones and mobile networks people in Nepal actually have, not on a flagship device in an office.

We started with the feed, because in a social product the feed is the product. Everything else is navigation. We designed and prototyped it before writing backend code, testing how it read with two posts and with two hundred, on a small screen, in one hand.

The architecture was then built around the assumption of a poor connection rather than a good one. Content is paginated aggressively, images are transformed server-side so a phone never downloads more than it will display, and the app is designed to remain usable while requests are still in flight rather than blocking behind a loading state.

Moderation, account safety, and reporting were built into the first release rather than deferred. A platform whose whole premise is open expression carries an obligation to be deliberate about abuse from the outset, and retrofitting those tools onto a live community is considerably worse than building them early.

We designed for both platforms with respect for each one’s conventions, then shipped in fortnightly builds so the client could use the real thing on a real phone throughout, rather than approving screens and hoping.

The platform is live on the web at nepaler.com and on both app stores, where the listings are still published under the original Jestha name. It carries a 13+ rating and a Social Networking category listing.

It has also outgrown what we first shipped, which is the outcome you actually want from a foundation. Alongside the feed and profiles it now runs short-form Clips, Adda discussion rooms, direct messaging, a Premium tier, and a Market Prices section, the kind of feature that only exists because the people who built it live here.

For us it became the reference build for every social and community product we have taken on since: the feed architecture, the image pipeline, and the moderation model all trace back to decisions made here.
